Point of Pride: Flint Central High School

Flint has a proud tradition of great schools. One tradition that goes back over 125 years is that of Flint Central High School.

Flint's original high school, Central has been the educational anchor of the city's cultural center. In addition to the school's outstanding academic curriculum, the theater program has been recognized nationally by the Educational Theatre Association.

Central's athletic program has produced a wide range of successful amateur and professional athletes including: Olympic Gold Medalist and Professional Baseball player Jim Abbott, College Football Hall of Fame member Don Coleman, and WNBA standout and current Penn State Head Woman's Basketball Coach Coquese Washington.

Additional outstanding alumni include U.S. Senator Don Riegle, U.S. Congressman Dale Kildee, Top 40 DJ Casey Kasem, and American Idol Finalist LaKisha Jones.

Today, Flint Central's current 80 year old landmark building is at the top of the list of possible federal stimulus projects for renovation.

Oak Business Center Fostering Opportunity for Entrepreneurs

The Oak Business Center is one of Flint's many unsung success stories. The Center, located on north Saginaw Street, is the home to 18 new and small businesses. All 18 have been started up by local entrepreneurs. The Center is proof entrepreneurs not only exist in Flint, but can prosper.

Center Executive Director Bill Wood has helped create a positive mix of light industrial and retail/office businesses. Currently, Wood is looking for a barbershop and computer repair that could take advantage of the center's low rental rates as well as the city's Renaissance Zone tax abatements.

If you know of someone who may interested in taking advantage of this opportunity or if you just want to see this Flint success story, contact Bill Wood at (810) 235-5555 or oakbusinesscenter@gmail.com.
